Lois F. Wasoff has established a legal and consulting practice specializing in copyright and trademark matters, with a particular focus on issues related to publishing. Her clients include publishing companies, not-for-profit organizations, individuals with publishing and intellectual property related concerns, and law firms seeking expert support in a specialized area of practice. Her particular areas of expertise include: copyright law and policy; contractual, legal and business issues related to the development and distribution of content in traditional and electronic media for the trade, educational and scholarly markets; the development and licensing of software; e-commerce issues; and international considerations related to all of these areas.
Wasoff has played important roles in industry-wide initiatives through her representation of her clients on several key committees of the Association of American Publishers, and at meetings and conferences held in the United States and abroad. She is the past Chairman of the Copyright Committee of the Association of American Publishers, of which she has been an active member for more than 15 years. She chaired or co-chaired a number of subcommittees of the Copyright Committee, including the AAP Task Force on Distance Education and the Ad Hoc Committee on Licensing and Fair Use. She is the current Chairperson of the New England Chapter of the Copyright Society of the U.S.A. Her clients include the publisher Houghton Mifflin Company and Publishers International Linking Association, Inc. (known as "CrossRef"), a trade association of over 300 scholarly publishers from the United States and Europe that was formed to facilitate online research in scholarly literature.
Wasoff has more than 25 years of experience in the publishing, media, communications, technology and entertainment industries. Until March of 2002, when she left to begin her own practice, she was Vice President and Corporate Counsel of Houghton Mifflin Company. Prior to joining Houghton Mifflin Company in 1990, Wasoff was Senior Counsel at Simon & Schuster, Inc. Formerly a litigation attorney at Cowan Liebowitz & Latman, a New York law firm specializing in copyright and trademark matters, she began her career in 1975 when she graduated from New York University School of Law and joined the litigation department of Milbank, Tweed, Hadley and McCloy.
